The Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture is investigating the balance of power in the Norwegian grocery industry, and a working group has released its preliminary results for a public hearing . The Informed Individual has sent a reply to this hearing.
The working group has concluded that the industry is very concentrated, and suggests a number of measures to expose it to effective competition. We have focused on the information aspects, leaving antitrust topics to others.
Our conclusion is that the working group is spot on when it comes to their analysis - that the consumer desperately needs information that he's not getting today, but we disagree on their suggested methods. While the working group suggests building a portal for price comparisons, we urge that the raw data on everything relating to products be freely published, so anyone can make an interface with whichever presentation and interpretation.
